Savings

How much could you save by eliminating variable costs on those unrented rink hours?
Hopefully you are already saving on the lights, water, and fuel variable costs and thus those savings need not be discussed here. The exact savings from covering the ice with insulation are dependent on your facility's location, its construction, the refrigeration equipment used, and the insulation properties of the ice cover. Assuming the insulation can stop 100% of the heat transfer from the surroundings to the ice and the refrigeration machinery has the capability of automatic shutoff, then the savings for an average $8,000 plus monthly utility bill, are more than $21,000 per year. The utility bill includes costs from the lights and other non-refrigeration costs, because the utility company normally does not have a separate bill for these items. These costs generally account for about 30% of the electric bill. Therefore, eliminating the refrigeration variable costs is saving the average $8,000 plus monthly-electric-bill rink more than $15,000 annually.

What would the variable costs savings add up to in a year in a real ice rink?
For typical rinks with electric power driven refrigeration equipment, the savings will be less than if the variable costs were totally eliminated. This is because insulation is not 100% effective. The IRUM (patent pending) achieves up to 90% effectiveness. That is, the insulation used in the IRUM slows the heat transfer by up to 90%. Also, some secondary refrigeration systems have trouble shutting down brine pumps etc. With adjusting, most of secondary systems can be made more efficient to work with the IRUM. The savings (see link below) are based on various electric rates, facility operating months, and daily unused hours.

What could you do with those savings?
For the private rink, the first and easiest answer to this question is MAXIMIZE PROFITS. That's right, maximize return to the shareholder. By cutting costs and maintaining prices, you will have more money to return to the investors.

For the public rink, extra purchasing power is a major use for your new savings. If you have only one budget (capital and operating together), then how about that new Zamboni, edger, brine pump, or dehumidifier. The savings could be used to hire more productive employees or give your current employees a raise.
